Leather care

Condition, stitch, and save cracked leather.

The stitch

Leather doesn't tear, it cracks. Condition it, then close the cracks with a waxed saddle stitch.

What you need

wax beeswax or a leather conditioner
needle a leather needle, or an awl
thread waxed linen or polyester
stitch saddle stitch, two needles

How to start

Condition first, always — dry leather splits when you stitch it. Then saddle-stitch the crack closed, and wax the seam to seal it.
